A standard 20ft container fits about 8–10 full 1000-litre caged IBC totes floor-loaded, and a 40ft fits roughly 18–20. If the totes are rated for stacking, double-stacking two high roughly doubles those numbers (about 16–20 in a 20ft, 36–40 in a 40ft). Foldable knock-down IBCs shipped empty pack far tighter — often 4–8 times more units per container. For filled totes, weight usually caps the load before floor space does.
What actually decides how many IBCs fit
An IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container) tote is a 1000-litre cube — typically a plastic bottle in a steel cage on an integrated pallet — with a footprint of roughly 1.2 × 1.0 m and a height around 1.15–1.20 m. Four things set your per-container count: the tote's footprint, whether it can be stacked, the container's internal dimensions, and the payload weight limit.
Footprint & floor area
A 20ft has ~5.9 × 2.35 m of usable floor; a 40ft about 12.0 × 2.35 m. At ~1.2 × 1.0 m each, totes tile the floor with some gap loss, which is why floor counts land around 8–10 (20ft) and 18–20 (40ft).
Stackable vs not
Only stack-rated IBCs should be double-stacked. When they are, internal height (~2.39 m standard, ~2.69 m high-cube) lets you go two high — roughly doubling the count.
Container payload
For water-weight liquids, a filled IBC is ~1,050–1,065 kg. A 20ft payload is often ~21–28 tonnes, so you can hit the weight ceiling at 8–10 filled totes regardless of remaining floor.
Knock-down / foldable
Foldable IBCs collapse flat when empty. Shipping empties this way multiplies units per container and slashes per-unit freight — the single biggest lever on empty-tote programs.

Load optimization and cost per unit
Say you are importing empty 1000-litre IBC totes. Shipped rigid, a 40ft container fits roughly 18–20 units — so the ocean freight for that box is divided across ~19 totes. If the same tote is available as a foldable knock-down design and collapses to, say, a quarter of its assembled height, you could pack on the order of 80–140 units into the same 40ft.
- Rigid empty totes: ~19 units per 40ft → the full container freight cost is spread over just 19 totes.
- Foldable knock-down: often 4–8× more units per box → per-unit freight can fall by a similar factor.
- Trade-off: knock-down units need on-site reassembly and may cost slightly more per piece — weigh that against the freight saving.
- Filled totes: the calculation flips — weight, not volume, sets the count, so foldability doesn't help; plan around the payload limit.
