Injection mould tooling in China is a one-off up-front cost, separate from the per-part price. A simple single-cavity steel mould typically runs about $3,000–$15,000; multi-cavity or family moulds roughly $8,000–$50,000+; and complex, high-volume hardened tools can exceed $100,000. Cost is driven by part size, cavity count, steel grade, geometry, finish, and tolerances — so treat these as ranges and get a DFM-based quote.
What "tooling cost" actually means
An injection mould (the "tool") is the precision-machined steel or aluminium block that shapes molten plastic into your part. You pay for it once, up front — it is not the same as the per-part price you pay in production. Because it is bespoke to your geometry, there is no single list price: the same part can be quoted very differently depending on cavity count, steel grade, and how the tool is finished.

More cavities cost more up front — but less per part
A single-cavity tool makes one part per shot: cheapest to build, slowest to run. A multi-cavity tool makes several parts per shot: more expensive to build, but the moulding machine time is shared across many parts, cutting the per-part price. The right choice depends on your forecast volume — over-tooling for volume you never reach wastes money.

Amortisation, and who owns the tool
Say a single-cavity tool is quoted at $8,000 and you plan 40,000 parts. Paid up front, that's an added $0.20/part in year one and $0 thereafter. If a factory instead "amortises" it into your unit price, they typically add a margin — and often keep ownership, locking you in.

How DFM reduces tooling cost
Design for Manufacturing (DFM) is where most tooling savings are found — before a single block of steel is cut.
