What Is MOQ? Minimum Order Quantity in China Explained
MOQ is the smallest quantity a Chinese factory will produce in one order. Here's what drives it, typical ranges by category, and the levers that actually lower it.
MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity) is the smallest number of units a Chinese factory will accept for one production order. It exists because setup, tooling and bulk-material costs are largely fixed, so short runs are uneconomic. Typical MOQs range from about 50โ500 units for simple stock goods to 1,000โ10,000+ for custom-tooled products. You can often lower it by cutting variants, paying setup fees, using stock materials, or sourcing through an agent who pools volume.
What MOQ actually means
MOQ โ Minimum Order Quantity โ is the floor a supplier sets on a single purchase order. Below it, the factory either declines the job or charges a premium. Crucially, MOQ is usually defined per SKU or variant, not per order: a factory quoting 1,000 pcs may mean 1,000 of each colour or size, not 1,000 across the whole range.
It is separate from โ but related to โ the minimum order value. Some suppliers care about total dollars, others about unit count. As a worked example: if a factory quotes an MOQ of 3,000 units at a $2.40 FOB unit price, your first order is roughly $7,200 in goods before shipping, duties and any tooling charge. Trade Entrust works to a $10,000 FOB minimum order value per project so the fixed cost of managed sourcing stays justified for the buyer.
Typical MOQ ranges by category
Indicative only โ real MOQs depend on the factory, the design, and how much customization you need.
Figures are broad industry ranges for orientation, not quotes. Custom molds, colours and packaging typically push MOQs toward the top of each band.
Why factories set an MOQ
MOQ is not arbitrary or greedy โ it reflects how manufacturing economics work. Most of the cost of a production run is fixed and happens before a single sellable unit comes off the line.
- Machine setup and changeover time is fixed, so short runs cost the factory the same to prepare as long ones
- Custom tooling and molds are expensive and only pay off across thousands of units
- Raw materials (fabric rolls, component reels, resin) are bought in bulk minimums from suppliers
- Small orders tie up production slots that a factory would rather fill with volume clients
- Custom packaging and printing carry a fixed plate/setup charge regardless of quantity
How to lower or negotiate the MOQ
Not every MOQ moves, but many first-order minimums are more flexible than the quote suggests. These levers work in practice.
Order fewer variants
MOQ is often per SKU, colour or size. Consolidating to fewer variants lets you hit the total volume the factory needs while keeping your commitment down.
Pay a tooling or setup fee
Many factories will drop the MOQ if you cover the fixed setup cost upfront rather than amortizing it over a big run.
Use stock materials & packaging
Accepting standard colours, existing molds and plain or generic packaging removes the minimums tied to custom inputs.
Combine orders through a sourcing agent
An agent who buys across many clients can pool volume and use standing relationships to negotiate a lower first-order MOQ than you could alone.
Commit to reorders
Factories often relax a first MOQ if you can credibly signal repeat business rather than a one-off trial.
