AQL 2.5 explained: what Acceptance Quality Limit really means
AQL 2.5 is the industry-standard threshold used to accept or reject a whole production lot from a random sample. Here's how the sampling works, what the number means, and when to demand a stricter level.
AQL 2.5 means an Acceptance Quality Limit of 2.5% β the most common standard for major defects in general consumer goods. An inspector checks a random sample sized by the ISO 2859-1 tables; if major defects stay at or below the accept number for AQL 2.5, the whole lot passes. It is a pass/fail threshold, not a promise that only 2.5% of units are faulty.
What Acceptance Quality Limit actually is
AQL (Acceptance Quality Limit, sometimes called Acceptable Quality Level) is the maximum percentage of defective units that a sampling inspection will still treat as acceptable. It comes from the international standard ISO 2859-1 (equivalent to ANSI/ASQC Z1.4), the same statistical framework used across manufacturing worldwide.
The key idea: for most orders you cannot afford to check every single unit, so you check a representative random sample and use it to make a confident pass/fail decision on the entire lot. The AQL is the line you draw. A lower AQL is stricter (fewer defects tolerated); a higher AQL is looser.
A crucial nuance importers get wrong: AQL 2.5 does not mean 2.5% of your shipment will be defective, and it does not mean you have agreed to accept 2.5% bad units. It is the quality threshold the sampling plan is designed around β batches meaningfully worse than 2.5% major defects are statistically likely to be caught and rejected.

Defects are never treated equally. Each class gets its own AQL, so you can be strict where safety and returns are at stake and pragmatic on cosmetics.
Critical defect

Major defect
Likely to cause a return, complaint, or failure in use
Example: Wrong size, non-working feature, obvious stain

Minor defect
A small departure from spec that most buyers tolerate
Example: Slight color shade, tiny loose thread, faint scuff
